A COMEDIAN IN A SYRIAN TRAGEDY

Rami Farah, Eng sub, 2019, 125 inc. Q&A

Scandinavian Premier, Grand Teatret - Copenhagen

This documentary film is a chronicle of a revolution and war, experienced by the famous
Syrian actor Fares Helou. Fares’ life changed radically when he joined the people in the
streets of Damascus calling for the fall of the Syrian regime. He immediately had to go
underground and director Rami Farah joined him in hiding with a camera. When Fares
had to flee from Syria to France Rami followed him. However, neither the actor nor the
director had a script for the new chapter in their lives: exile. A chapter full of questions,
disappointments and alienation, but also of absurdity and cultural confusion that calls for
laughter. A Comedian in a Syrian Tragedy is an intimate observation of the psychological
violence and the exiled existence experienced by the director and his favorite actor

Event: Meet the director Rami Farah and the Syrian actor Fares Helou for a debate with audience, moderated by Lilas Hatahet

A NEW BEGINNING

Ala'a Mohsen, Eng sub, 2020, 78 min

Rabeaa arrives from Syria in Norway with his four-year-old son Kais. The two are alone in a new world, and together they must start a new life. Rabeaa dreams of recreating the feeling of being a family, which is so important to both of them. But he has been injured in the leg and can barely walk, does not know Norwegian society and does not speak the language – yet. The Danish-Iraqi director Ala'a Mohsen joins the small family of two during their new beginning, which offers both challenges and breakthroughs. His first feature film starts where other films about refugees in Europe usually end. 'A New Beginning' is a film that is made with great humanity and dedicated realism. Reality is not shaped in order to lead this new beginning towards a happy ending at any cost, so when the first touches of light and progress appear in the midst of Rabeaa and Kais's situation, it is all the more joyful to witness

CHAOS

Sarah Fattahi, Eng Sub, 2018, 90 min

Denmark's premier, Gloria Biograf- Copenhagen

The film narrates the story of three women in three different cities. They have given up on life. One lives in Damascus. She has stopped speaking to others entirely, isolating herself in her flat.

The other has left Damascus as a result of the war and went to Sweden, where she imprisons herself in her paintings, hoping through them to rid herself of the torments of the past.

The third ended up in Vienna and faces an unknown future, like the ghost of a woman who fled Austria after the Second World War.

It is a discussion between a woman stuck in Damascus, a second stuck in exile, and a third who has recently left. It is a conversation between the interior and exterior – an impossible conversation

THE GREATEST SACRIFICE

Eyad Aljarod, Eng sub, 2018, 125 min inc. Q&A

Denmark's Premier, Gloria Biograf- Copenhagen

Haaf and Daour live in the Syrian city of Saraqeb. Both men are actively involved in the revolution, which began in 2011 as a peaceful movement. For three years, director Eyad Aljarod, who's also from Saraqeb, follows them as the character of the revolution changes. Gradually, we see fewer songs and lectures, less unity, and more weapons, destruction, banditry and Islamist militias.

At first, Aljarod captures hopeful meetings and meaningful, sometimes poetic conversations, indoors or in the car that Daour uses to patrol the roads, looking for anything that might be endangering his fellow citizens. But the atmosphere takes on a more ominous tone when Daour and others like him arm themselves against Assad's government army, which operates a scorched-earth policy. Saraqeb is consumed by fear, sorrow, frustration and rage.

Daour and his fellow fighters try to liberate the city, one building at a time. And once again the camera is right there in the line of fire. Aljarod keeps filming, no matter how dangerous things get. His unflinchingly committed testimony highlights the hope and unity among these helpless but resolute citizens and brings home the destructive power of war
